Bible Minute: The Error of Decisional Evangelism

The Bible Minute is a short audio program featuring a Bible topic each week.

This week’s topic talks about a serious error that has turned the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ into a focus on human decision. In this edition, we’ll look at the difference between the common gospel call of today with the true Biblical one.  The Scripture reference is Romans 1:16.

The Nevers of the Gospel

ValleyofVision

O LORD,
May I never fail to come to the knowledge of the truth, never rest in a system of doctrine, however Scriptural, that does not bring or further salvation, or teach me to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, or help me to live soberly, righteously, godly; never relying my own convictions and resolutions, but be strong in Thee and in Thy might; never cease to find Thy grace sufficient in all my duties, trials, and conflicts; never forget to repair to Thee in all my spiritual distresses and outward troubles, in all the dissatisfactions experienced in creature comforts; never fail to retreat to Him who is full of grace and truth, the Friend that loveth at all times, who is touched with feelings of my infirmities, and can do exceedingly abundantly for me; never confine my religion to extraordinary occasions, but acknowledge Thee in all my ways; never limit my devotions to particular seasons but be in Thy fear all the day long; never be godly only on the Lord’s Day or in Thy house, but on every day abroad and at home; never make piety a dress but a habit, not only a habit but a nature, not only a nature but a life.

Do good to me by all Thy dispensations, by all means of grace, by worship, prayers, praises, and at last let me enter that world where is no temple, but only Thy glory and the Lamb’s.

Not What My Hands Have Done

Not what my hands have done can save my guilty soul;
Not what my toiling flesh has borne can make my spirit whole.
Not what I feel or do can give me peace with God;
Not all my prayers and sighs and tears can bear my awful load.

Your voice alone, O Lord, can speak to me of grace;
Your power alone, O Son of God, can all my sin erase.
No other work but Yours, no other blood will do;
No strength but that which is divine can bear me safely through.

Thy work alone, O Christ, can ease this weight of sin;
Thy blood alone, O Lamb of God, can give me peace within.
Thy love to me, O God, not mine, O Lord, to Thee,
Can rid me of this dark unrest, And set my spirit free.

I bless the Christ of God; I rest on love divine;
And with unfaltering lip and heart I call this Savior mine.
His cross dispels each doubt; I bury in His tomb
Each thought of unbelief and fear, each lingering shade of gloom.

I praise the God of grace; I trust His truth and might;
He calls me His, I call Him mine, My God, my joy and light.
’Tis He Who saveth me, and freely pardon gives;
I love because He loveth me, I live because He lives.

When I Get Older…

When sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with folks I often hear, “I’ll get right with God when I am older, or when I am on my death bed.” My heart cringes to hear such words of disdain towards God. Our young and bold minds and hearts think that we are immortal and will live forever. However, we know all too well that life is a vapor and both the young and the old die – often unexpectedly. Scripture tells us that today is the day of salvation. It is a call to not put off turning to Christ in repentance and faith.

It would be rare to hear an unbeliever never catch themselves telling Satan when tempted, “not today, let me put this sin off until later in life”, yet they tell God to stand aside all the time. It’s a true indication of the heart of man. A heart that is evil and stony. It is why the gospel is such great news. For it is the power of God unto salvation to all who believe. (Rom. 1:16)

Thomas Watson, one of the great Puritans, penned in his excellent book, “The Beatitudes” the following on the folly of so called death bed repentance. I agree with his evaluation…

To put off our solemn turning to God till old age, or sickness, is high imprudence, because these late acts of devotion are for the most part dissembled and spurious. Though true morning for sin be never too late, yet late mourning is seldom true. That repentance is seldom true-hearted which is gray-headed. It is disputable whether these autumn tears are not shed more out of fear of hell than love to God. The mariner in a storm throws his goods overboard, not but that he loves them, but he us afraid they will sink the ship. When men fall to weeping-work late and would cast their sins overboard, it is for the most part only for fear lest they should sink the ship and drown in hell. It is a great question whether the sick-bed penitent does not mourn because he can keep his sins no longer. All which considered may make men take heed of running their souls upon such a desperate hazard as to put all their work for heaven upon the last hour.”

If you have been living this way, thinking that you will either have the opportunity to repent and trust in Christ in your old age or that you are the captain of your life and know what tomorrow holds I urge you to take great heed of the seriousness of the condition of your soul. God’s wrath rightly abides on all outside of Jesus Christ. Cry out to God and ask Him to grant you true faith and repentance – for today is the day of salvation.

O Holy Night

Now that Thanksgiving is over it’s time for Christmas music! This is one of my favorite Christmas songs performed by what has to be the most talented musicians on the planet called Celtic Woman. May this performance get you in the Christmas spirit…

The Sinner’s Prayer

sinnerbig

As a false convert for over 20 years of my life I know the dangers first hand of the “sinner’s prayer” and the hellish teachings of “carnal Christianity” and the unBiblical phrases like “ask Jesus into your heart”. I too was told by many that since I repeated a prayer and was “in the club” that no matter how I lived my life I was still heaven bound. Salvation is not only from the penalty of sin but from the power of sin! Salvation is the product of being born again – being a new creation with a new heart and new desires and a God-given hatred for sin.

Friends of this blog, if you don’t watch a single video I have posted I urge you to watch this video. This man’s testimony is spot on. This will cause many to shudder and my prayer is that if you have trusted in a prayer, walking an isle and profess to be a Christian yet live a life of sin and love the world you need to examine yourself and cast yourself on the Savior Jesus Christ. If you are a pastor, teacher of evangelist who has watered down the gospel and holds to the hellish teaching of carnal Christianity I urge you to examine the Scriptures and repent.

My Christmas Gift to You

music17As many of you know I am a musician and love to write and arrange music – especially hymns.  One of my favorite hymns is “Crown Him With Many Crowns”.  During this Christmas remember that the little babe in the manger is crowned with many crowns as the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

So, I put together a short orchestral arrangement of “Crown Him With Many Crowns” and offering it here for everyone to download and use as they want.  I hope it blesses you as you reflect on the words of this magnificent hymn this Christmas!
