Did God Cause the Tsunami?
Christ’s Perfect Righteousness
Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. John 19:30
“Has Christ perfected and completely finished all His work for us? How sweet a relief is this to them that believe in Him against the defects and imperfections of all our services. There is nothing finished that we do: all our duties are imperfect. Oh there is much sin and vanity in the best of our duties; but here is the grand relief, and that which answers to all our doubts and fears upon that account: Jesus Christ has finished all His work, though we can finish none of ours; and so, though we be defective, poor, imperfect creatures in ourselves, yet we are complete in Him. (Col. 2:9-10) Though we cannot perfectly obey, or fulfill one command of the law, yet is “the righteousness of the law fulfilled in us that believe.” (Rom. 8:4) Christ’s complete obedience makes us complete, and without fault before God. It is true, we ought to be humbled for our defects, and troubled for every failing in obedience; but we should not be discouraged, though multitudes of weaknesses be upon us, and many infirmities compass us about in every duty: though we have no righteousness of our own, yet, of God, Christ “is made unto us righteousness;” and that righteousness is infinitely better than ours: instead of our own, we have His. Oh, blessed be God for Christ’s perfect righteousness!” – John Flavel (from the Fountain of Life, pg. 429)
Birds & Fish Dying – Is it the End?

Some of the events that have been occurring around the world have definitely sparked conversation and an interest in end-times. Biblically speaking there really isn’t anything related to the birds dying or the fish dying in isolated areas. As with everything, we should make Scripture our guide.
Christ teaches us that the events leading up to His second coming will affect the entire world and not just isolated areas. Lawlessness will increase worldwide (Matthew 24) and a great falling away from the faith will occur. (2 Thess. 2:3) (The falling away will be those who profess Christ but are not truly saved.) Then there will be great signs in the heavens and a pouring out of God’s wrath and judgment on the entire earth. (The description of the moon turning to blood is likely a description of God’s judgment since those same descriptive terms are used in the O.T. for God’s judgment on the nations.) There are descriptions of some of the judgments in Revelation that affect natural resources such as the sea and fresh water but keep in mind that it will have global affect.
That being said, we must also never forget that everything is under God’s sovereign control and that He has either directly caused these recent events to happen or allowed them to. We should see these events as pointers to the greater reality that judgment is coming, Christ is returning, and we are to be ready. (Matt. 24:44) I am reminded of an incident in Scripture where some people came up to Jesus and asked Him if the people that Pilate mixed their blood with the sacrifices or the people that the tower of Siloam fell on were greater sinners. Jesus used that tragic event to remind them that unless they repented they too would likewise perish. (Luke 13:1-5) We too should be vigilant of events going on in the world to remind us of the reality of coming judgment and the surety of Christ’s second coming.
The important thing is that we keep our noses buried deep in Scripture so that we will be ready and be ever discerning with regards to events occurring in the world and the things we see and hear. The world will react sensationally, and we are called to be sober-minded and stand firm in the truth of Scripture eagerly awaiting the return of our King! In light of this great truth that our Lord will return, believers should seek to live pure lives (1 John 3:3) and continually be setting our minds on things above where Christ is seated in the heavenly places far above all rule and authority. Amen!

That I May Know Him

More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
Philippians 3:8-11
Worthy is the Lamb

My wife is doing a study of Revelation and as we were discussing it over breakfast this morning it got me wanting to dig back into that glorious book. I’ve taught from Revelation several times and every time I am more and more amazed by the description of Christ in chapter 5. The description of the throne room of God and the worship of the Lamb who was worthy to be slain at its center is awesome. I remember reading in a commentary on Revelation that one of the best deterrents to sin is to meditate on this amazing scene in heaven. There is great truth in that recommendation! Chapter 5 is a short one but it is seething with the magnificence of Jesus Christ. Every time I read this chapter I hear Handel’s Messiah – especially the ending movement entitled ‘Worthy is the Lamb’.
Marvel at these glorious words from Holy Scripture…
Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
And they sang a new song, saying,
“Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals,
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”
Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped. (Revelation 5 ESV)

The Centrality of Christ

In this excellent sermon, Paul Washer gives great insight into the importance of the difference between a love for Christ and a love for the benefits of Christ. Far too many come to Christ for His benefits which amounts to nothing less than idolatry while there is little or no love for Christ Himself. I agree with Washer that we’ve reduced the gospel down to a series of questions and a signature on a card and forgotten the great and awesome truths of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. May we repent and return to the full proclamation of the full counsel of God’s Word and marvel at the glorious truth that “He made Him who knew no sin to become sin on our behalf so that we might have the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Cor. 5:21)

God is My All
You Shall Not Pass!

I must admit that I am a fan of the Lord of the Rings movies. There is a scene in the first of the trilogy where Gandalf is on a narrow bridge about to fight a large underground demon. Gandalf stands right in the middle of the bridge and yells out, “you shall not pass!” to the creature. Every time I watch that scene I am reminded of an important Biblical truth.
In the book of Genesis we learn that God created absolutely everything ex nihilo, out of absolutely nothing. He created everything and said that is was good. It was not long after that mankind chose to rebel and commit as R.C. Sproul puts it “cosmic treason” against God. We need to remember that God would have been perfectly just if He had chosen to annihilate Adam and Eve right then and there but instead what we read of is God’s great mercy in giving Adam and Eve the very first gospel in Genesis 3:15.
Mankind has hope in the One who would crush the head of Satan. However, there is still a problem. Man has sinned and therefore cannot be in the presence of God. God’s perfect holiness demands separation from sinful humanity and this is precisely why the great hope of the Savior hinted at in that first gospel is so important. That being said, we then read in the Genesis account that God banishes Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden along with the curse of the Fall. While there is great horror in being separated from God and the results of the Fall, there is amazing hope in the One who would make all things right.
One of the things I find so amazing about the progressive revelation of Scripture is that absolutely everything in the Bible is about Jesus Christ. It all points to Him. Let me draw your attention to what God puts in place after Adam and Eve are banished from the Garden of Eden (which represented close communion with God). Recall that God placed cherubim at the entrance of the Garden holding flaming swords. (Gen. 3:24) Like in the movie The Lord of the Rings, these cherubim were a reminder that “you shall not pass”! Because of the Fall and the sin of man we cannot come near God because of His holiness and our sinfulness. Access to God has been blocked.
Now flash forward to the tabernacle. Moses was given explicit instructions on how to construct the tabernacle while he was on Mount Sinai receiving the Law. I’ve talked with many people who are excited about reading through the Bible and they make it through Genesis and then hit Exodus and halfway through Exodus they slow down because they become overwhelmed by all the detail in the tabernacle’s specifications. One thing that always helps is to realize that God is spending so much time on the intricacies of the tabernacle because of who it all points to – Jesus Christ.
As we read through the details of how the tabernacle is to be constructed, don’t miss the fact that cherubim show back up. In fact, God instructs that the thick curtain that separates the holy place from the holy of holies (where the ark of the covenant is kept) is to have cherubim embroidered all over it. In addition, the outer curtain that actually made up the entire tabernacle was also to have cherubim all over it. To those drawing near it was a constant reminder that there is a barrier between man and God and that barrier is a result of our sin. It would instantly remind all those who gazed on the tabernacle of the Genesis account of those cherubim holding the flaming swords blocking the way to the very place where intimate fellowship with God was a reality.
Likewise, once a year on the day of atonement only the High Priest was able to pass through the curtain into the Holy of Holies to make atonement for his own sins and the sins of the people. Immediately the High Priest was confronted with the ark of the covenant and as he sprinkled the blood on the propitiatory seat there would be two angels carved out of gold facing the seat. This was a constant reminder that the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sin. The fact that daily sacrifices and a constant yearly sacrifice was needed was clear evidence that these sacrifices were insufficient and that they pointed to the only sacrifice that would be sufficient and perfectly efficient – the sacrifice of the Lamb of God.
So in essence, what we see being presented over and over again through the Genesis account and also in the tabernacle is the announcement, “you shall not pass”. These cherubim were there as a reminder that the way is blocked. There is only one way to stand before God. Many today believe there are multiple ways to God but there is only one. Jesus Christ plainly stated that He is the way, the truth and the life. He did not say He is a way but the way. This is beautifully shown to us in the ending of the gospels.
All along the angels were there as a reminder that the way is blocked. It’s as if they constantly had their hands up with a resounding “no!”. But let us now witness a scene in Scripture where the angels are no longer blocking the way. Three days after the Lamb of God was nailed to the cross as the substitutionary, penal sacrifice we find several women coming to the tomb to anoint His body with oils and spices. They find the tomb with the large stone rolled out of the way and two angels appear to them. The glorious part of this scene is that the angels are no longer saying “you shall not pass”, they are now heralding that the way is now wide open through the risen Savior. The One that the women were seeking is not dead but alive! He has conquered death and sin and has rose victoriously for our justification! We can now come to God through the new and living way – through the veil of Christ’s flesh. (Heb. 10:19-20)
Let us marvel at the glorious truths of Scripture. May our hearts and minds be drawn upward where Christ is in the heavenly places. There is no greater news that can fall on human ears than the great gospel of Jesus Christ. The grace and love of God is shown most magnificently and fully at the cross. God demonstrated His love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. (Rom. 5:8) If you have put your trust in Christ alone for your salvation then spend time thanking Him and meditating on these great truths.
If you are outside of Christ cry out to Him and ask Him to grant you true repentance and faith to escape the wrath to come. May the cherubim be a visual lesson to you that the way is blocked because of our sin and God’s wrath on our sin. There is only one way to be forgiven and have the righteousness required to stand before God and that is through faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Rest on Him alone in faith! All who come to Him with a contrite heart and a broken spirit will not be cast out! In Christ it is always “you shall pass!”
Soli Deo Gloria!
Jesus Satisfies the Law’s Demands and Curses
The second Adam’s perfect holiness of human nature, and obedience of life to the precept of the law as a covenant, are as necessary to the justification of sinners as is His suffering of its penalty. The doctrine of justification by faith establishes the law, the whole law, the honor of the precept as well as that of the penal sanction. But this it could not do if it did not represent the righteousness of Jesus Christ as consisting in His active obedience as well as in His passive. Active obedience, strictly speaking, cannot be said to satisfy vindictive justice for sin. And, on the other hand, suffering for punishment gives right and title unto nothing, it only satisfies for something; nor does it deserve any reward, as John Owen mentions in his work on justification. Christ’s satisfaction for sin could not render His perfect obedience to the precept unnecessary; nor could His perfect obedience make His satisfaction for sin by suffering the penalty unnecessary, because it was not of the same kind. The one is that which answers the law’s demand of perfect obedience as the ground of title to eternal life; the other is that which answers its demand of complete satisfaction to divine justice for sin. The meritorious obedience of Christ to the precept could not satisfy the penal sanction; and the sufferings and death of Christ, could not satisfy the precept of the law. The commandment of the law as a covenant requires doing for life; the curse of that law demands dying as the punishment of sin. These, though they are never to be separated as grounds of justification, yet are carefully to be distinguished. The perfect obedience of Christ is as necessary to entitle believers to eternal life as His suffering of death is to secure them from eternal death. His satisfaction for sin, applied by faith, renders them innocent or guiltless of death; and His obedience makes them righteous or worthy of life (Romans 5:19). As the latter, then, is as necessary to complete their justification, according to the gospel, as the former, so it is as requisite as the former to establish the honor of the law.

These Words Are Faithful and True
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true. The He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be His God and he will be My son. But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolater and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:3-8
