Books

November 21st, 2008

I’ve been blessed to be able to grow a library of excellent books on orthodox Christianity - many from Puritan writers. I think everyone has their favorites and I have a handful that I would recommend.

Speaking of books - I would recommend that you purchase books from places such as monergismbooks.com or Westminster Books. Many of the local bookstores have given in to the wiles of the world and carry books that are worldly and full of humanistic self-help.  By supporting stores that continue to promote and sell materials that are watered-down gospel presentations and at worst heretical you are helping to fund their greed.  I’ve provided a link for each of my book recommendations to order to book directly from monergism.

The Life of God in the Soul of Man by Henry Scougal
This is one of those books that absolutely every Christian should read - at least twice. I cannot stress how much of an impact this little book has made on me.  It’s a short read, easily read in a couple of hours but one you will want to pour over because of the depth of the theology behind this book.

The Acceptable Sacrifice by John Bunyan
Thought to be Bunyan’s most impressive and important book with “Pilgrim’s Progress” right behind, this is a must read - especially today!  Bunyan offers a profound insight into Isaiah 66:2 as well as Psalm 51 show show the sacrifices of God.

The Great Exchange by Jerry Bridges
Probably one of the best books I have read on the heart of Biblical theology - the atonement.

The Pleasures of God by John Piper
Classic Piper.  Frankly, anything written by Piper is well worth your time.  This is just one of my favorite books written by Piper.

A Tale of Two Sons by John MacArthur
Again, you can’t go wrong with anything written by MacArthur.  This is an excellent, easy to read commentary on the Prodigal Son that goes well into the Biblical depths of this parable showing both sides of the coin and a Biblical truth that is often overlooked when this parable is taught or preached.

Foxe’s Book of Martyrs by John Foxe
Again, another book that every Christian should own.  A must have!

The Almost Christian Discovered by Matthew Mead
A puritan classic that is not only extremely convicting but a must read for today’s church.

Jesus the Evangelist by Richard Phillips
An excellent book that details the life of Christ and the evangelistic techniques He used.

Justification and Regeneration by Charles Leiter
Undoubtably one of the best books I have read on the doctrines of justification and regeneration.  This is one of the few books Paul Washer will put his name on and endorse!

This is only a very short recommendation list and I will be adding to it as time permits.  Please feel free to leave a comment with your book suggestions and drop me an email with your recommendations.

Where is “Your Best Life Now” or “The Shack”?  Friends, these are not Christian books no matter how much you want them to be.  To be Christian must first and for most be concerned with Christ, and not just any Christ but THE Christ of Scripture.  The moment a book destroys the orthodox teachings of who God is in the face of Christ you are no longer reading about the One True God.  In addition, books such as “Your Best Life” are more concerned with you than with God.  Don’t even waste your time.

soli Deo gloria!
