Put No Confidence in the Flesh

November 29th, 2008

Romans 9:26
“And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called ’sons of the living God.’”

Philippians 3:3
For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh—

The Prayer of the Damned

November 29th, 2008

The “sinners prayer” as it is so called by many is one that is unBiblical and sends many to hell. If someone is saved from reciting a prayer it is in spite of the prayer. May we return to full, Biblical gospel of repentance and faith and the outcome of a regenerated, transformed life that treasures Christ above all.

This video is excellent. May we examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith. (2 Corinthians 13:5)

The Old Rugged Cross

November 25th, 2008

We’ve sung this old hymn so many times but have we truly listened to the words. Like “Rock of Ages”, my absolute favorite hymn, and “The Solid Rock” this beautiful hymn also sings such truth of Holy Scripture.

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.

Thanksgiving

November 25th, 2008

I have so much to be thankful for.  Frankly, we should thank our God everyday for each and every breath we take and for every beat of our heart as they are gifts from God.  We should also thank Him for the trials that come into our life as we know that “all things work for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.”  Rom. 8:28

May we also remember those who are lost in this world - those without Christ.  Those whose sins are causing the wrath of God to abide on them.  May we have our hearts filled with the love of Christ to go therefore and boldly proclaim the Gospel of God to a sick and dying world.

I thank my God for His Son Jesus Christ.  For through His mercy and grace my sins are forgiven through His merit and atoning death and the wrath of Almighty God is propitiated since He became my sin on that cross.  ”Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”  (John 1:29)

As we celebrate Thanksgiving this year may we be reminded of the most ultimate gift we should be thankful for -the gift of eternal life and pardon through faith in Christ Jesus by grace.  May we be thankful of the gift of the Holy Spirit as He dwells within us to comfort and guide us as we eagerly await and groan for the coming of our Lord with all of His mighty angels.  May Christ reign in your hearts as you experience His grace and mercy this Thanksgiving day.

There is Enough in Him

November 14th, 2008

This evening, while my wife is recuperating from surgery on her shoulder, I was doing a study on Exodus chapter 22. As I read through this chapter, I see the utmost care God takes to protect those who could easily be taken advantage of and the helpless.  I see also the sobering reality that His law demands that all must answer to Him in both what they do maliciously as well as heedlessly. This of course draws me to rejoice in the grace and love of my Savior knowing that by His grace through faith I am clothed in the perfect righteousness of God. How humbling and how exhilarating. May the Word of God and His perfect Law cut us like a knife, piercing the heart and draw us more and more to the beauty, magnificence, mercy and grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His glorious cross-work.

While doing a search on Exodus 22:31, the last verse in that chapter, my good ol’ Bible software pulled up Matthew Henry’s great commentary entry. I paused at the last sentence of Henry’s entry and took a moment to reflect on the precious truth that “there is enough in Him to satisfy all the desires of our souls.” Oh how the world and our own flesh tempts us to temporary pleasures that pale in comparison to the infinite fountain of joy that is in Christ our All in all. May we see the lusts of the flesh as but dung compared to the infinite pleasure and joy found only in Christ our Savior, King and Prophet.

“Let these scriptures lead our souls to remember, that if the grace of God has indeed appeared to us, then it has taught us, and enabled us so to conduct ourselves by its holy power, that denying ungodliness and wordly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world, Titus 2:12. And the grace of God teaches us, that as the Lord is our portion, there is enough in him to satisfy all the desires of our souls.” - Matthew Henry’s Commentary on Exodus Chapter 22

Father, I pray that my eyes be opened more and more to Your glory in the face of Your Son Jesus Christ. Help me to always remember that Your grace is sufficient and that I am called to be holy as You are holy. May I, through the power of Your precious Spirit, mortify the deeds of the flesh and always look to the sweet joys of walking in the Spirit. Grant me always to look to the cross of Christ and look upward to Your throne and see my Great High Priest living forever making intercession for me. Oh the joys of Christ. Forgive us of our foolish ways dear Lord and Father of mankind. May we always set our eyes and minds on things above and not on things of the earth. Amen.

soli Deo gloria!

The Devil is but a Whetstone

November 10th, 2008

“Not one ounce, not one grain-weight more is laid on me than He hath enabled me to bear… Faith hath cause to take courage from our very afflictions; the devil is but a whetstone to sharpen the faith and patience of the saint. I know he but heweth and polishesh stones for the new Jerusalem.”

How Could God Do This to Us?

November 4th, 2008

“Thursday in Minneapolis it was so gorgeous walking home I thought: I should write a post on how astonishing it is that no earthquake swallowed up this city today.

Instead God sent warmth and crystal skies and cool breezes and golden leaves and hanging sea gulls over Elliot Park.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing!

We deserved the 52-story IDS tower to fall, and bridges to collapse, and poisonous gas to kill thousands. But instead God gave us over-the-top foretastes of heaven.

This is why everyone is crying out, Where was God on Thursday! Where were you God! How could you do this? Why did you let this happen?

Everybody is saying that, aren’t they?”
