Early on in my life, I did pray the "sinner's prayer" and thought I was saved (since I made a "decision"), but there was no change in my life at all...and when I would try to talk with someone at church about it, they would just look pityingly at me and say "well, were you SINCERE?" (Um, that's a bit hard to know, since the heart is deceived and desperately wicked according to Jeremiah 17:9). I must have prayed that prayer thousands of times, and cried out for forgiveness. The thing is, God knew my heart and He very graciously and lovingly showed me that salvation is ALL of Him, from start to finish. It's the difference between trusting in an empty "prayer" or trusting in a Person (Jesus). I couldn't believe UNTIL he turned my heart of stone into a heart of flesh and HE GAVE me the faith to believe. How wonderful is our God and how amazing is His GRACE...

Rachelle,
Praise the Lord for His grace and mercy to open your eyes to His glory and granting you true faith and repentance. All glory to Him! Stay in constant prayer for your family that He will open their eyes as He did yours. May the Lord grant you peace and grace and I know it must be difficult watching your family being caught up in this false teaching but remember that our Lord is above all earthly powers!

Soli Deo Gloria!

i grew up in "easy believism" with my family. i prayed the sinners prayer when i was a child(need to repent was not clear to me) and was so sure i was saved even tho inside i felt things were wrong. i was still a massive sinner and even moreso thinking i had the freedom to sin all i want ("because i am saved"). became agnostic in college and then one day in college i saw a video on hell and finally i understood i am going there. so i prayed to Jesus this time understanding the need to repent of my sins. i am horrified that the rest of my family seems to be *deeply* in "easy believism" and i pray to God daily to let them see the true gospel and to cause them to repent. i am in such anguish over my family feeling they are blinded to the truth. first hand i have seen the profound damage done by this false gospel.

In the summer of 1984 I also repeated the sinner's "prayer". I was told that I was saved and that if I persevere, I would never be lost (it was in a Pentecostal church). Three years later, in the spring of 1987 I heard a message on the radio about the perseverance of the saints and how the salvation is secured in Christ and how a truly Christian perseveres till the end. What impacted me was when the preacher said that those who claim to be Christians but do not live a changing life or do not persevere till the end were not saved to begin with (he was paraphrasing 1 John 2:19). I got convicted by the Holy Spirit and that night I called upon His name for salvation. It has been 22 years and despite of my failures (so many of them) I am still in the faith. And when I went through a faith crisis five years ago, He restored me.

I am a living proof that altar calls and sinner's prayers are not to be trusted and that they are dangerous. People leave churches thinking that they are saved because they made a decision for Christ when they are on their way to hell. It is important that we pray for pure and sound doctrine.

Great article and message. I have seen first hand the dangers of this kind of theology. America is a great nation and place to live but our freedom comes at a cost... It is much more difficult to separate our freedom from our theology.

Wonderfully said brother, but sadly it is the truth of the American gospel. The Lord was gracious enough to open my eyes to this false gospel as well, so much that the Lord took me out of my (then) church home, to put me in a very Chirist centered, biblical church. In fact in 2 weeks we are hosting a conference that addresses just these concerns. Please check out the website and please pray that the Lord is magnified on Oct. 11th at this event, pray that the ears will be opened and hearts broken and the TRU message of God is spoken and received. www.realtruthmatters.com
