Classes Started!

August 31st, 2007

CIU LogoWoohoo! Class is in session at CIU (Columbia International University) and so far I am having a blast. This semester I’m taking just one class, O.T. Survey. At CIU it’s a 5 hour class so it’s taking up every morning except Mondays so it’s about all I can handle and still run a business during the day! It’s great meeting new people and getting a chance to talk about different views.

My professor, Dr. John Crutchfield, is great - very informative and adds a ton of wit and humor to the class. It’s a lot of reading but oh how exciting to grow closer to God by studying, reflecting and meditating on His Word!

A few observations:

  • You truly cannot get enough of the Old Testament. I stress this to my Sunday School class each week. I am reminded of 2 Timothy 3:16. When Paul writes under the inspiration of God that all Scripture is God-breathed (theospneustos) he means ALL Scripture.
  • Our professor has our class sing one hymn together each time we meet. I love this. Not only does he stress that students today are missing out on the great old hymns but that we can learn so much from the rich theology of the hymns. So if you haven’t gotten out the old hymnal lately why not blow the dust off of it tonight, grab grandma to play the piano and sing a few old hymns after dinner tonight. (And don’t forget to read the words!!!)

I am so blessed to be able to attend a good Christian college and have a wonderful wife that supports what God has planned for me. I’ll be posting on my blog my experiences (and of course those “aha!” moments when you come across something in Scripture that you just have to share with others) and observations from an average guy who is going back to school to serve his King!

Asking for your prayers….

Soli Deo Gloria!

Jay, great that you say that you truly can not get enough of the OT. We recently discussed in my Hermeneutics class simply how fundamental it is to read and see the structure of the OT. To study and understand how OT authors interpreted scriptures should impact our hermeneutic as well. We begin to see this pattern of scriptural interpretation that should give us a good idea of how to follow suite in interpretation. So AMEN, to ignore the OT and to think it isn’t important is foolish in light of reading the entire counsel of God.
